THE GERMAN SYNTHESIS: JULIUS LIPPERT’S

VERSION OF MATRIARCHAL MYTH

One of the most comprehensive treatments of matriarchal myth on the continent came in the mid-1880s with the work of Julius Lippert. A prolific independent scholar of working-class origins who supported himself as a schoolteacher, Lippert published two books on matriarchal myth: Die Geschichte der Familie (The History of the Family) in 1884 and Kulturgeschichte der Menschheit in Ihrem Organischen Aufbau (translated into English under the title The Evolution of Culture) in 1886. Lippert’s treatment was essentially a materialist one. The second of his two books on prehistoric matriarchy may have been written in response to the work of Engels and Bebel, although it is just as likely that Lippert was inspired directly by Morgan, as Engels himself had been.
